Find the Resources Your Family Needs

Special Needs Advisors will guide you towards services and housing solutions for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Our aim is to make the journey less daunting for your family.

We are your New York State Housing Navigators!

HOUSING

Special Needs Advisors help families find or create appropriate housing solutions and support services for their family member with disabilities. While we work with many agencies and organizations on your behalf, we are also general advocates for improving the system around the care of individuals with special needs. We really care about their future.

WHO WE ARE

Our personal family histories have given us the experience and the passion for helping others. Special Needs Advisors know that all families wonder what will happen to their disabled relatives both in the short and long term and struggle to find solutions. We are accredited NYS Housing Navigators trained to work with the Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled (I/DD) population.

OUR SERVICES

There is profound change in the special needs housing and services field as it evolves towards managed care. Over time the system should be flexible, person-centered, and community-oriented with many safeguards. Special Needs Advisors want to share best practices with you and ensure you know what benefits are available. We also want to let you know where the gap is between what is theoretically accessible and current reality.

HOW WE WORK

In our initial conversations with new clients we establish their immediate and long-term goals and histories to determine the scope of the work. We help set reasonable expectations both from us as advisors, and from the service providers and government agencies. We hold an initial one-on-one consultation to develop a global picture of the individual and family we are advising. This allows the client a chance to assess us as well. While we cannot guarantee to deliver or provide access to all that the family hopes for, we do practice person-centered planning and will do our absolute best to help the family navigate access to the benefits, support services, housing, and independent living that are available from government agencies, state agencies, not for profit corporations, the OPWDD, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and privately to create an appropriate life and work plan for the individual

HOW WE WORK

In our initial conversations with new clients we establish their immediate and long-term goals and histories to determine the scope of the work. We have clients at every phase of finding their most suitable home and services, from those just starting to those needing to make changes after many years. We like in person meetings initially and then as needed or requested by the client.  Our one-on-one consultations help to develop an informed picture of the individual and the family that we are working with to perform and establish person-centered planning and supports.
